Kenyans Peter Ndirangu and Fred Kiprop lay down the first serious attack in the Chinatown section of the course. Ndirangu throws in back-to-back 4:43 miles - the fastest of the race thus far - and only Kiprop and Khalid Khannouchi can answer the challenge. |

The remaining runners can't make the sub 4:50 pace, and quickly lose ground to the surging trio. As the pack passes a wheel chair duo (who are in perfect position to witness the break), Jerry Lawson (back center) slips off the back of this pack. |
