  1. October Activities:
    • 21st-Informational Booth in Davies.10-2
    • 26th-Informational Meeting. Workers: TOM, JANE, ANNE, TRACY
    • 27th-Informational Meeting. Workers: TOM, JENNY
      **We need to order food for this.
      **TOM-send e-mail to all prospective members week of 24th
    • 29 th-Tidy Up the Town/Make a Difference Day
    • Halloween Social??
  2. November Activities
    • 7th-Officer meeting
    • 14th-Member meeting
      *We decided to hold this meeting in Hilltop in the BOWLING place so we can go bowling for our November social! However, something to think about is that if a person can’t make it to our normal Monday meeting time, then he/she won’t be able to come to our social event either, so we may want to switch this.
    • 14th-18 th-Adopt-A-Teacher Essay Contest (essays due on Friday 18 th)
    • 20 th-Induction ceremony (LORI and others) **So far we have 40 new members!!
      • Katherine Haake from UW-LaCrosse
        *She is the national Golden Key student representative, and TOM will contact her to speak at our ceremony!
      • Keynote speaker?
        *We need a keynote speaker for our ceremony and we should ask them no later than Thurs. Oct. 20 th. Possible people to ask are Blake Westerlund and Kent Syverson. Blake is already an honorary member. Kent is not. We can ask for more speaker nominations at our next meeting. **ALSO, what should the speaker talk about-any ideas, PAULA?
      • New ceremony style.

    • *Selling Hurricane Katrina Wristbands
      **Golden Key will be selling bracelets on Wed. Nov 9 and Wed. Nov. 16th
  3. October Meeting-10/17 at 6:00 p.m. in Hibbard Penthouse
    **Activity: JANE will buy paper and supplies because we will be making Halloween cards for residents at Eagleton, the Syverson Center, and for our pen pals at Dove. Jane will also buy juice.
    **JENNY will order pizza.
    -Sign up sheets for selling wristbands, Tidy Up the Town, Book Ends pen pals, after school enrichment, Halloween activity
  4. Educational Activities
    • Tidy Up the Town/Make a Difference Day
      CASSIE will contact the speaker asap and will let us know if she is able to speak and the time. We will probably have her speak from 10-10:30 and then start raking leaves at 10:30!!
    • Adopt a Teacher Essay Contest (Jane, Jenny, Angela)
      *The contest will be for all 5 th graders in Eau Claire. The point of the contest will be for 5 th graders to write an essay with the following 3 parts:
      1. Tell why your teacher is special
      2. Tell why education is important to you.
      3. Describe one or some of your favorite classroom activities.

      *JANE, JENNY, and ANGELA will write up the guidelines for the contest that will be sent home on a slip of paper with the kids, and they will contact the schools in Eau Claire. We will send out the slips of paper to the schools on Friday Oct. 28, so those of us at the informational meeting on the 26 th can proof read what they write.
      *We will judge the essays after Thanksgiving break and prizes will be awarded in early December. Prizes will be as follows: $100 for the best essay, and two $50 prizes. The money will go to the classroom/teacher of the winning student and will be used for a fun classroom educational activity.
      *We need a CATCHY name for the essay contest, and we decided that the students will write the essays out of class and on their own time and that they can send them by mail to PAULA’s office (Davies 133)!

      • -Donate $200 worth of books to Sacred Heart Hospital.
        LORI will order Guess How Much I Love You ($200 worth) from Borders (20% discount) asap.
      • Assisted Living Residents
      • Pen Pals. Simple and easy, and we can visit them and have an activity before we start our pen pal writing.

        LORI checked with Eagleton and Dove and found that it will be easier to do pen pal relationships with people at Dove. We will have a sign up sheet for people interested at our next meeting. We will try to meet with our pen-pals early in November. She said that the residents there may have difficulty writing back, but that’s okay. We can also go to Dove and read to the residents.
        ANGELA checked with Our House and said that Golden Key members can read to people or play bingo with them at any time if we let the Our House staff know about a week in
    • After School Enrichment
    • - Lori-did you receive any more responses? NO, but e-mails have been sent out, and we will try to get more participation at our next meeting. -Once it gets started it would be nice to get some publicity-Channel 18 News?
    • Graduate School Expo.
    • -Eric-what did career services have to say?
      **TRACY and ERIC will check with Career Services. We need to get started on this by early November!
      -When should we begin contacting schools?
      -How many schools do we want to have?
      -What should we charge per booth?
      -Who should we invite…UWEC students, UW-Stout, UW-LaCrosse, U. of M?
  5. Tentative Education Fund Budget:
    • $1000
    • 100 backpacks
    • 200 Book Ends books
    • 250 Adopt a Teacher Essay Contest (also money for television publicity)
    • 100 After school enrichment
