senior couple on beachGerontology is a multidisciplinary field that addresses the many facets of the human aging experience. Increasing life expectancy in the United States and worldwide has led to growth in the older population and served to highlight a variety of issues associated with aging in areas such as economics, health care, employment, retirement, housing, politics, and family/intimate relationships.

Careers in aging span multiple fields and represent a variety of occupations.  Gerontological Specialists can play many different roles, such as providing direct services to older people (e.g. health, legal, and social services), designing, implementing and evaluating programs for the elderly, assisting with financial planning, administering agencies and organizations that serve the needs of older individuals, and conducting aging-related research (Quadagno, J. 2011. Aging and the Life Course. An Introduction to Social Gerontology, fifth edition, New York: McGraw-Hill, pp. 20-23).

The Gerontology Program has a long history on the UW-Eau Claire campus.  The Gerontology Minor has been in existence since the late 1970s and a Gerontology Certificate within the Social Work Comprehensive Major was established in the early 2000s. Other Gerontology-related programming can be found in the Health Care Administration Comprehensive Major via its focus on long-term care administration and affiliation with the Center for Health Administration and Aging Services Excellence (CHAASE), as well as in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, which operates the Nursing Centers for Health.

UW-Eau Claire faculty with expertise in aging can be found in many disciplines including:

  • Communication Sciences and Disorders
  • Health Care Administration
  • Nursing
  • Psychology
  • Social Work
  • Sociology

We invite you to explore this increasingly important field by taking a course, pursuing a minor, major, or certificate program in a Gerontology-related field, and/or examining the multitude of resources on the topic.

Excellence. Our Measure. Our Motto. Our Goal.
