The use of stucco on houses was and still is very unusual even though it is a very durable and easy to maintain material. Stucco represented a new building material in the 1920-1930s. It was also used during this period to "modernize" older houses: chicken wire was nailed on top of thin clapboard, for example, and then plastered over.
