Eau Claire: Median House Value: White Population

This is a map of the median value of houses for the White population.  This map shows the general pattern of housing value.  The center of the city, or downtown areas, house the least valuable properties.  The more valuable houses surround the downtown area, and keep increasing in value the farther away from the city center.

Downtown is filled with student and low-income housing.  The outer edges of downtown are where the wealthy live in valuable houses.  The older neighborhoods, like the Third Ward, were built by wealthier people to be more valuable.  There are newer developments being built around the city which are valuable compared to downtown.

The values were broken down into four groups and mapped to show where the least and most valuable homes are located in Eau Claire for the White population (Values of Houses).

An interesting comparison can be made between this map and a map of People Without Cars. These two maps look similar in respect to the downtown area.  The tracts with the least valuable housing tend to be the tracts without cars.  It makes sense for these people not to have cars because they live in the center of the city and can get around on foot, bike, or transit fairly easily.  The higher value housing tracts tend to have low numbers of people without vehicles.  They live farther away from downtown, and possibly their job, so they need a car, and they can usually afford it.
