The data for the cemetery studies will be examined using SPSS-PC (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences on Personal Computers), which should be found in most of the UWEC comupter labs. Here are a few simple instructions to get you going. Don't be afraid to experiment with the many options in this very powerful statistical program.
Aggregated Data by Cemetery Area
When the individual tombstone data are aggregated (or combined)
by the area of the cemetery, SPSS calcuates such numbers as average, min,
max, etc. for each area. See the menu
below:
Once the aggregate
file has been created (aggr-cem367.sav is provided for geog367)
create bar graphs by following these
instructions:
When
this menu appears, select Simple and
Values.
Now
select the variable you want to examine and move it into the Bars Represent
box and under Category Labels,
select Variable and
pick sec (area of the
cemetery):
