Hollywood:
Movie Theaters
At the Grumman's Chinese Theater, the fantasy of the architecture
matches the fantasy of the places shown in the movies inside.
What
is
on the sidewalk?
Answer: The Walk of the Stars: each star on the sidewalk represents
a famous movie star! This has become a tourist attraction in its own
right.
Hollywood Boulevard attracts over 9 million tourists each year,
yet what they found prior to 1991 was inner-city decay.
This place has
suffered from urban riots, earthquakes, and the building of the L.A. subway.
Hollywood's long decline started in the 1930s with the departure of
the movie studios. By 1991, several large-scale entertainment projects
are now being built or planned:
Disney is restoring for $5 million the El Capitan theater
$100 million in public and private money for 69 new developments and
36 renovations
Max Factor building and the Pacific Theater are being restored. Will tourists flock to this newly recreated Hollywood or will they
prefer the sanitized version at Disney World?
