The cemeteries shown here included an abandoned
19th-century Protestant cemetery in Soweto,
Johannesburg, three photos of an active Protestant cemetery used by poor
Blacks in the wine country of Western Cape
(very similar to cemeteries on U.S. Indian reservations), and the leper
cemetery on Robben Island,
Cape Town.
In
northwestern Zimbabwe,
dead parents are buried outside but next to family compounds: mothers in
the back and fathers in the front, shown respectively below. Each grave
is marked and protected by logs.
