Cemetery in Mongolia
The nomads do not generally bury their dead, rather than use "sky
burials," exposing the dead body to the elements on high elevations. Once the
nomads move to the cities, they use cemeteries, such as the one shown here. All
of the cemeteries we saw looked like this: angular, irregular shaped stones or
thin metal pieces with simple name inscriptions on top of concrete slabs. Some
of the graves have metal poles with moveable Buddhist prayer wheels (home-made
tin cans that catch the wind) on the top. Notice the absence of fences, gates,
and, of course, vegetation, including trees, in this steppe landscape.
