The railway network in India is the third biggest in the world after Russia and China with 63,000 km of rail routes and 6,800 stations, and has the largest  number of passenger-kilometers. Indian Railways is also the world's biggest employer, with over 1.5 million people. The photos here come from a trip from Cochin to Coimbatore: the major broad gauge routes are shown in red. Train travel is very well organized: tickets indicate car and seat number; signs indicate where the cars will be found on the platform; porters are ready to carry your suitcases; food and drinks are available on the platforms and in the trains. Three classes of cars provide no air conditioning, and air conditioning for second- and first-class. On over-night second- and first-class trains, linens, pillows, and blankets are provided. Western and Indian toilets are clearly marked.
