Udaipur villages
Against the backdrop of dusty land and sunny skies,
Rajasthan is filled with opulent colors, the sparkle of mirror and silver
and precious stones, and the sheen of silk and vivid kaleidoscope of cotton.
The brilliant green crop (in January) is winter winter, often
irrigated in this dry region of India. Corn, vegetables, and sugar cane are
grown in the summer with the monsoons. Corn and wheat straw for the last
year's harvest are stored (in piles on the ground and/or in trees) near houses for water buffalo and cattle feed.
Straw is packed into circular piles for storage -- up to 3-4 years. A
family shows us their farmstead. Women wear their wealth on their bodies in the
form of silver necklaces, ear- and nose-rings, and anklets. Men
wear golden amulets. Rugs are woven from the hair of camels (brown
color), sheep (black and white colors),
and goats (black and white colors) -- making them very rough and durable.
Cotton and jute are also woven with animal hairs.
