The exotic and vividly colorful state of Rajasthan with majestic forts,
stately palaces, lakes, sand dunes, camels, and people dressed in brightly
colored costumes is well illustrated
by Udaipur, founded in 1567, which is still a
walled city with several city gates and divided into two parts by a
river (dry in 2005). The city is dominated by several former palaces,
from which you can view the Lake Palace. The old city has narrow
streets. The city has 19th-century garden for the Udaipur rulers and
new resort hotels (Hilton). Many of the former princes have done well for
themselves, illustrated by their contemporary mansions. The tribal people
of Rajasthan make decorative quilted-clothing with tiny glass mirrors.
