Between Hospet, 460 km northwest of Bangalore, and
Hampi lie several
villages. Sugars cane, bananas, and rice are
common crops. Artificial fertilizer is being applied to a newly planted
sugar cane. Most of the bananas are exported to Goa. Water buffalo
are used for milk and bullocks as draft animals. Livestock dung is
dried on walls and used for cooking fuel and/or sold in town. A small Hindu
temple is in one village. Worshipers have hang stones on the
branches of a holy bodhi tree to have their wish for houses come true.
Stone carvers in Hospet produce Hindu icons for homes and temples.
