Perur temple dedicated to Shiva in
Coimbatore is visited by thousands during temple
festivals -- arriving by car, bus, and truck. The ornate figurines
on the towers are common in South India. The banyan tree is
actively worshipped. The dairy cattle provide milk for the temple
priests. Notice that milk flowing is over the black stone with the calf
on the side. The tank next to the temple is still used occasionally --
historically, this was the source for water and washing for the community.
Holy men stand around the temple grounds for offerings. Stalls next
to the temple sell offerings: fruit and flowers. Stone carvers create
religious images for homes, businesses, and temples.
