Street markets are found throughout India. Local farmers bring fresh vegetables to town, often daily, and local fishers sell their daily catch near permanent butcher stalls and stores. Without refrigeration, Indian families shop daily for their food needs. Unripe bananas get ripened as needed by heating them in cement-room. Despite a predominantly vegetarian diet, meat -- chicken, beef, and water buffalo (shown here), but far less commonly, pork -- are eaten in India.
