Scholarships:

Scholarships are awarded by a vast number of agencies and companies and are money that does not have to be paid back. Scholarships can be awarded for:

  • academic achievement
  • achievement and need
  • area of discipline (you’re major: teacher, etc.)

Scholarships can be restricted by region (where you live), age, gender, affiliation, religion, race, etc.

Grants:

A grant is a form of need-based financial aid, which does not have to be repaid. To be considered for grants, you must be an undergraduate student working toward your first bachelor’s degree.

Loans:

Loans are made to students and must be repaid. Loans usually involve interest although it is usually pretty low. Interest rates and repayment terms vary according to the loan program.

Types of loans:

  • Federal Perkins Loan
  • Federal Stafford Loan (Subsidized and Unsubsidized federal loans)
  • PLUS (Federal parent loan for undergraduate students)
  • Alternative loans (requires co-signer, interest charges quarterly)
  • Institutional

Student Employment:

  • Work Study: If you qualify, you can earn a paycheck with part time employment on campus or in designated off-campus location.
  • Job: if you don’t qualify for a work study position on campus, you can look for jobs in the area to help pay for college.
