My most enjoyable life experience has been traveling in Europe with my wife. We have visited Austria (Salzburg and Vienna), Belgium (Antwerp), Britain (Bath, London), the Czech Republic (Prague), France (Paris and Versailles), Germany (Berlin, Cologne, Dacau, Frankfurt, Freiburg, Giessen, Heidelberg, Marburg, Munich, Nuremberg, and Rothenburg), Hungary (Budapest), Ireland (Kilkenny, Tramore, and Waterford), Italy (Florence, Rome, Trent, and Venice), the Netherlands (Amsterdam), Poland (Auschwitz, Krakow, and Zakopane), Russia (Moscow and St. Petersburg), and Switzerland (Basel, Chur, and Lucerne).
Traveling in Europe has given me a greater appreciation for art, architecture, history, and culture. My favorites are the art museums, castles, and cathedrals. Some selected sight-seeing highlights include: the Van Gogh exhibit at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, impressionist paintings at the Musee d' Orsay in Paris, the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, Westminster Abbey in London, the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican in Rome, the Cologne Cathedral, the Prague Castle, Schoenbrunn Palace in Vienna....I could go on for a long time!
My wife and I travel on our own, not as part of a guided tour package. As a result, we rely on travel books to steer us to the right places to visit, sleep, and eat. Rick Steves is the best travel guru out there, providing lots of travel tips and links. We used Let's Go Europe on one of our trips and Fodors on another. Frommer's and Lonely Planet are useful sources as well.
Closer to home, we've had wonderful times visiting New York, Washington, DC, Toronto, and Chicago.
