TV Shows and Movies

Television

With two young boys, it seems most of my TV time is spent watching kid shows.  We watch the programs on PBS Kids (my favorite is Arthur) and Nick Jr. (my favorite is Kipper).  Thomas the Tank Engine, Theodore Tugboat, and VeggieTales are video favorites.  Scooby-Doo is the latest craze.

I do watch shows for grown-ups, too.  My TV viewing parallels my reading preferences.  I watch most of the American Experience documentaries on PBS.  The film adaptations of literature classics on Masterpiece Theatre is a must-see for me.  I never miss MYSTERY! on PBS.  A&E Mysteries repeat some of these same mystery series (Sherlock Holmes, Poirot, and Morse) and broadcast some new ones as well (Frost, Dalziel and Pascoe, Cracker, Silent Witness, and Midsomer Murders).  I have also watched the Ballykissangel series on PBS for the past several years and, more recently, Cold Feet on Bravo.

Movies

My movie going has dropped dramatically in the past few years (with young children in the house), but I still consider myself a movie buff.  I've seen nearly every one of the 100 Greatest American Movies selected by the American Film Institute.  Some of my all-time favorites are It's a Wonderful Life, To Kill a Mockingbird, Cinema Paradiso (Italian), Kolya (Czech), and Fargo.  As I get older, my taste in movies is for off-beat, foreign, or independent films rather than the mainstream Hollywood fare.  I rely on reviews by Roger Ebert (in print or Ebert & Roeper and the Movies) and the Austin Chronicle for guidance.
