According to 2000 U.S. census data Newark is the largest city in New Jersey with a total population of 273,546.  Black are the majority population with 146,250.  They make up 53.5% of the population.  Hispanics are second in total population with 80,622.  They make up 29.5% of the population.  Whites are in third with a total population of 72,537.   They make up 26.5% of the population.

According to 1992 population data Newark is ranked 61st in the U.S. in total population.  They have the third highest death rate in the country with cities lager than 200,000 people.  They also have the seventh highest crime rate in the U.S. as well as sixth highest percent of people below the poverty level.  Newark has the second highest rate of households receiving public income.  They also have the second highest unemployment rate in the country.  They also 76th out of 77 in people with a bachelors degree or higher.  On the positive side they have the eighth highest percent of people using the public transit system and the also have a average temperature in July of 77.8 degrees.
