The Moment of Autumn in
Dallas
Autumn arrives at night in late October, After a spell of
rain, Before cold winds, The softened soil surrendering summer
heat.
In darkness finally longer than daylight Crickets find an
ancient languorous chant. And then beneath a half-moon, Among the
silver sails of broken cirrus, Geese sound out their timeless pings of
global navigation.
A Dallas train yard drifter eyes an idling
southbound freight. An oak in Exall Park relaxes slightly. Three
leaves fall.
