Albuquerque Government
Mayor | City Council Members

Albuquerque government is organized around a city council and mayor. Albuquerque, New Mexico's largest city, has nine districts and each one gets a city council member. Currently the Albuquerque City Council has three Hispanic representatives out of the nine councilors which is proportional to Albuquerque's Hispanic population.  One of the Hispanic members is also the only women on the Albuquerque City Council.

Members are elected for 4 -year terms; five out of the nine City Council member are elected in the odd-numbered years and four are elected in the even numbered years. Staring November 30th of 2001, the Albuquerque City Council will have new members. The new City Council members are Miguel Gomez, District 1; Eric Griego, District 3; Michel Cadigan, District 5; Sally Mayer, District 7; Tina Cummins, District 9.

The current mayor is Jim Baca who was elected in 1997. The Mayor appoints people to the high executive offices of the city, with confirmation by the City Council. The city council writes the governing legislation of the city which is then subject to the approval of the mayor. There is a Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) for the City of Albuquerque who manages day-to-day operations for city government, overseeing 18 city departments with over 7,500 employees and a total annual budget of over $755 Million. The CAO is appointed by and reports to the mayor and is confirmed by the council.  The City Council is also involved in personnel issues for the city employees.
