Fulfilling the Promise of Excellence campaign update

"I am forever grateful to my benefactors for allowing me to further my education so that someday I can teach others."

Dustin Vanoverbeke is a UW-Eau Claire senior majoring in biology with a minor in environmental science. He will graduate in May 2005.

Q&A with Dustin Vanoverbeke:

Dustin VanoverbekeBackground information: I received the William E. Nelson Memorial Scholarship in 2003-04. In 2004-05 I was awarded the Mary Lou and John Gerberich Biology Scholarship and the Joanne P. Smith Memorial Scholarship for Excellence in Science. I have also co-authored and been a beneficiary of two grants from the university's Office of Research and Sponsored Programs and a Council for Undergraduate Research Fellowship for faculty/student collaborative research.

Why I chose UW-Eau Claire: Of the schools I was considering, UW-Eau Claire stood out. It had great programs and was the best deal financially. The location was appealing too, since my brother was also moving to Eau Claire and we would be able to room together. Having the stability of family here was comforting to me as I moved away from home for the first time.

My postgraduation goals: I plan to attend graduate school and pursue a doctorate in entomology. Ultimately I would like to teach at an undergraduate institution where I would perform research and involve undergraduates in the process.

How donors' generosity has made a difference in my life: I'd had to take out substantial unsubsidized loans and couldn't take out any more because I had reached my allowable limit. The scholarships made it possible for me to complete my undergraduate degree at UW-Eau Claire.

What I'd like to tell my benefactors: I would like to tell my benefactors thank you for their generosity. They have helped me to pursue my dreams. Financially I was struggling to reach my goals, even though I was trying my very best. I am forever grateful to them for allowing me to further my education so that someday I can teach others.
