Students in the UW-Eau Claire Latin American studies program gain in-depth knowledge and understanding of the Latin American region, its people and its cultures. By pursuing a broad yet in-depth course of study, Latin American studies majors are well equipped to enter many fields and occupations as teachers in the United States or Latin America; as businesspeople sensitized to Latin American history and culture; or as journalists, government employees, lawyers and doctors whose contact with Latin America or Latin Americans in the United States is important. Latin American studies students develop language proficiency in Spanish and can choose from a broad range of courses in anthropology, art history, economics, foreign languages, geography, history, political science and religious studies. As the Latin American studies program continues to grow, so do its needs beyond the modest support it receives from the university budget. Private support is sought for the two areas of greatest need: scholarships and general funds to provide the greatest level of flexibility for operations and ongoing program development. The initial goal is to endow the Latin American Studies Scholarship to ensure a guaranteed source of annual scholarships. The initial endowment goal is $15,000, with an ultimate goal of a $100,000 scholarship endowment. This will provide a guaranteed pool of $4,000 to be awarded for scholarships. The goal for the Latin American Studies Advancement Fund is to have at least $5,000 in the fund to allow the program to have flexible support for student programs, recruitment of faculty and students, and exploration opportunities out of the classroom. Ideally, we would like to have an endowment of $25,000, which would provide an annual allocation of $1,000 to be used to meet the greatest needs of the program.
