Area landlords establish scholarships for student tenants

RELEASED: Feb. 12, 2007

EAU CLAIRE — Three area landlords are providing scholarships to UW-Eau Claire students to thank them for being good tenants.

University Area Housing, North Country Aire Properties and Caron Management are each providing $250 scholarships per semester to UW-Eau Claire students who are currently tenants in good standing with these businesses. The students are randomly selected from lists of tenants provided by the landlords.

The landlords believe the scholarships are a way to support students who are a source of their business.

"We take pride in our business and pride in our student tenants," said Robin Hall, office manager of University Area Housing, "This is a way for us to show our appreciation to our students."

The first scholarships were awarded during the fall semester to Randall Pingrey, a senior music major from Madison, who received the Caron Scholarship; Aliesha Dehmar, a graduate student in communication sciences and disorders from Monticello, Minn., who received the North Country Aire Properties Scholarship; and Grant Lissick, a senior from Vadnais Heights, Minn., who received the University Area Housing Scholarship.

Jodi Metz, owner of North Country Aire Properties, said her business is supportive of higher education and wanted the students to know it.

"We wanted to show our students that we value them as tenants and that we value their education as well," Metz said.

The businesses hope other landlords will hear about the idea and get involved.

"It's great to help the students," said Scott Gunem, an employee of Caron Management, "It's wonderful to be able to help alleviate some of the financial burden on students, and we hope other businesses will get on board with this so it can have an even bigger impact on students."
