Alum's $15,000 gift supports economics department RELEASED: Jan. 23, 2007
EAU CLAIRE — A Minnesota businessman and UW-Eau Claire alumnus has committed $15,000 to the UW-Eau Claire Foundation to endow a student support fund and help the UW-Eau Claire Economics Advancement Fund. Tom Lake, who graduated from UW-Eau Claire in 1995 with bachelor of science degrees in math and economics, said the economics department played a key role in shaping his career. "The reason I like to give to UW-Eau Claire and the economics department is because so many of my economics professors, Duane Oyen, Darwin Wassink, Ed Young and others, had such a positive impact on my college experience," Lake said. "That has contributed greatly to my professional success. I know these funds will help provide that experience to others." Lake said in addition to superior teaching and advising, the economics department also helped him find an internship with the business development office in Chippewa Falls. "Supporting the excellence of the department with an endowed fund was a priority," said Lake. "I wanted to provide an instrument that could provide long-term, predictable support." Lake has been dedicated to helping the economics department for a long time, said Ed Young, chair of the economics department. "Through the years Tom has supported many department activities, including the annual Alumni Excellence Awards," Young said. "We appreciate Tom's continuing support and his current increased giving to benefit students. His current efforts will help the economics department and UW-Eau Claire to contribute even more to student success." Lake's gift is recognized as a recognized as a contribution to Fulfilling the Promise of Excellence, the UW-Eau Claire Foundation's comprehensive campaign to benefit UW-Eau Claire's people and programs.
