Needs and Challenges
As hockey has grown in popularity and figure skating has remained the perfect sport for Wisconsin's winter, the demands on the Eau Claire Hobbs Ice Arena have grown. The success of high school and college hockey has increased the number of fans in the building. Demands for ice time and facility amenities are growing greater than the aging arena can provide. Some of the problems at the arena include:
- Inadequate Blugold men's and women's teams locker rooms — changing rooms upstairs and showers downstairs.
- Not enough seating for hockey games.
- Lack of space for concessions, lobby space, changing rooms and restrooms.
- High operating costs, which translates to higher ice fees and less accessibility to priority ice time.
- Lack of ice time due to increasing demands.
- Lack of training facilities.
