Alumna endows fellowship to support service projects

EAU CLAIRE — A UW-Eau Claire alumna has endowed a scholarship that provides students with funding to participate in service-learning.

Mary Hilfiker, an education specialist with the U.S. Department of Education's North Central Comprehensive Center, recently endowed the Mary Roelli Hilfiker Service Fellowship, which is awarded to an outstanding sophomore or junior seeking to complete a service project in Wisconsin, the United States or internationally.

Hilfiker, an experienced traveler who has visited all 50 states and every continent, believes combining service learning with travel enhances both experiences.

"Life is all about trying to make things a little better for those with whom we share this marvelous world," said Hilfiker, who graduated from UW-Eau Claire in 1967 with a bachelor of arts in education. "Service allows you to value others and yourself more."

The $1,000 fellowship provides for travel expenses, materials and supplies. The recipient will receive half the grant in advance and the other half after the project is completed and a written report on the results of the service activity is finished.

"Service-learning experiences help agencies and communities meet great needs, and students are able to enhance their leadership skills while honing service values that will last a lifetime," said Donald Mowry, director of the Center for Service-Learning at UW-Eau Claire.

Applications for the scholarship are currently being accepted and can be obtained in the Center for Service-Learning, Schneider Hall Room 113A, on the UW-Eau Claire campus. The deadline for application is April 1. History majors and women are encouraged to apply for this program.
