Honoring a a life of service
Athletics evoke emotions in all of us. The thrill of victory, the agony of defeat, the tragedy of loss.
We all celebrate the success of our teams and feel disappointment when they are defeated, and we also share in the sadness of tragedies -- tragedies like the loss of Blugold friend and former golf coach Doug Georgianni, who died April 19 at the age of 51.
Georgianni was the first women’s golf coach at UW-Eau Claire, directing the program from 1995-2001. He was instrumental in developing a nationally-recognized program. He led the team to its first conference title in 1998 and was also named the conference coach of the year that season. He took the first team to the NCAA Division III nationals in 2001 and this tradition has been repeated yearly since then.
“Doug was a man of principle," said Tim Petermann, retired sports information director, assistant to the athletics director and current athletics department consultant. "He always had a smile on his face and was constantly upbeat. I enjoyed being around him and getting into conversations with him about anything. He was sure to have an opinion and a rationale for it. He supported the entire Blugold athletics program and could be seen in attendance at many athletic events, even some on the road.”
