UW-Eau Claire is working toward making the world smaller. Click on the links below to learn about the specific ways we are preparing students to succeed in a diverse and global society:
Accelerate global learning
Better and faster global communication and travel have made the world more interconnected. More than ever, students need to be culturally aware and socially sensitive to the language and customs of people from around the world. Recognizing this need, the university’s strategic plan calls for meaningful cross-cultural experiences for every student. UW-Eau Claire already has a strong tradition of undergraduate study abroad. More than 400 students study abroad annually and UW-Eau Claire is ranked among the top 30 master’s-level universities in the number of students who study abroad. UW-Eau Claire professors also regularly participate in international experiences, and UW-Eau Claire hosts visiting international scholars and artists. However, more cross-cultural learning is necessary.
The UW-Eau Claire Center for International Education is working hard to achieve the global-learning objective of the university’s strategic plan. The primary challenge UW-Eau Claire students face in a study abroad experience is the additional cost. Our need is to develop scholarships to create affordable cultural exchanges, bring multicultural scholars and artists to campus and make curriculum adjustments. To achieve all this the CIE seeks financial support from UW-Eau Claire alumni and friends.

Service-learning and experiential learning
UW-Eau Claire’s strategic plan calls for expanding service-learning and experiential learning opportunities. Several service and experiential learning experiences are already offered by the CIE, including one in Costa Rica, where UW-Eau Claire nursing majors assist health care providers at rural medical clinics. UW-Eau Claire hopes to expand scholarships to nursing and education majors who want to perform service-learning abroad.
• Study Abroad Scholarship for Nursing
• Study Abroad Scholarship for Global Student Teaching
Immersion Experience
A key component in the development of engaged, lifelong learners is an immersion experience, in which participants become deeply involved in a rich,
stimulating activity designed to foster true engagement, inspire critical thinking and provide time for in-depth analysis, interpretation and reflection.
These immersion experiences can occur in the United States or around the world. The object of the immersion experience is to give students a broader cultural perspective so they better understand how different parts of this country and the world live and work. Your support will help the CIE further the goals of cultural immersion experiences for UW-Eau Claire students.

Removing barriers to study abroad
UW-Eau Claire’s study abroad program has demonstrated great success but, due to costs, the number of students planning to study abroad has begun to taper off. Studies have shown that program cost and time to degree is the greatest impediment to study abroad. To address the issue of cost, the UW-Eau Claire Center for International Education needs to establish morescholarships. Among the possibilities are:
• Freshman Recruitment Scholarship
This scholarship would provide 50 incoming freshmen with a scholarship commitment so when they are ready and eligible to study abroad, they will receive an award of $1,000. Not only would it be a great recruitment tool, itwould bolster the number of students able to study abroad by reducing monetary barriers.
U.S. students have traditionally studied abroad in Europe and Australia. Targeted scholarships to support study abroad in the regions below will encourage students to gain a deeper understanding of other regions:
• Study Abroad Scholarship for Latin America
• Study Abroad Scholarship for Asia
• Study Abroad Scholarship for Africa
Scholarships will help students develop a global perspective through study abroad in a wide range of world regions.

Bringing international students and scholars
to UW-Eau Claire
Another way UW-Eau Claire students can gain a more diverse cultural perspective is to meet and interact with international students and professors on the UW-Eau Claire campus. Providing scholarships to support students, especially those from developing countries, where the need is greatest, will make it possible for many talented but financially needy students to attend UW-Eau Claire. This fund will provide support to cover the costs of their room and board at UW-Eau Claire for the duration of their degree program. Not only do UW-Eau Claire students benefit, but the international students take back valuable knowledge to their home countries.
UW-Eau Claire already brings some 20 visiting international professors to campus each year. Students benefit greatly from the interaction in the classroom, and the professors take back valuable curriculum and teaching skills to their home countries. There is a need for more partnerships with other countries, particularly countries in Africa that have been underrepresented. This would create greater opportunities for cultural exchange, impacting research and bringing meaningful experiences to students here.

Helping international scholars from repressed world regions
One of the barriers to international higher education is the threat to academic freedom that some scholars face. The International Scholar Rescue Fund would provide matching support to the Institute for International Education’s Scholar Rescue Fund, and allow persecuted scholars to study, learn and teach at UW-Eau Claire, safe from persecution at home. Our students will learn about repressive governments and what consequences exist for people deprived of freedom. They will also benefit from seeing democratic ideals of academic freedom and freedom of speech reinforced at UW-Eau Claire.
Supporting international cultural programs
To establish partnerships and exchanges between UW-Eau Claire and international universities and countries, the CIE needs funding to provide hospitality to visitors from abroad. Currently the CIE has almost no resources for this. The Center for International Education Advancement Fund would help meet this need. The advancement fund also would help support internationally related cultural programming by bringing to campus visiting speakers who can promote greater cross-cultural learning for students and the community.
