Fund provides kitchen for busy faculty
A kitchen renovation for the biology department was made possible by the Gordon Bartelt Biology Fund established with the UW-Eau Claire Foundation by Margaret Bartelt, a UW-Eau Claire alumna, in memory of her husband, also a UW-Eau Claire alumnus. Both Margaret and Gordon were biology majors. The fund's income supports faculty and staff development and infrastructure needs in the biology department.
The addition of the kitchen lets space in the department be used more efficiently and provides busy faculty and staff members with a place to fix lunch without leaving Phillips Science Hall.
An area that had been used for storage and as a home for the department's computer and scanner was cleaned out and refurbished as a small kitchen. The computer and scanner were moved to a room used for class preparation, which makes more sense, said Faith Bogstad, academic department associate for the biology department.
The kitchen was needed because of the number of faculty and scheduling in the department, Bogstad said.
"The 30 department members often have overlapping labs or classes that make it difficult for them to leave the building for lunch," Bogstad said. "We all appreciate the new kitchen and are very grateful for Margaret Bartelt’s generosity. When we talked to her about what we wanted to do, she was very supportive.”
Marager Bartelt, a UW-Eau Claire 1972 graduate, is retired from the University of Arkansas in Little Rock where she taught, held labs and worked in research for years. She said she established the fund because she knew that departments had so little flexibility to buy equipment and to make infrastructure changes in their areas that would make teaching and working there better for all. Gordon Bartelt, also a 1972 UW-Eau Claire graduate, died in 2005 of a brain tumor.
