Two classified staff receive funding to advanced their skills
Two classified staff members at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire received scholarships to obtain advanced training from the Classified Staff Grant Fund.
Receiving $250 awards were Judith Gray, academic department associate for the UW-Eau Claire women's studies program, and Barbara Arnold, academic publications and curriculum coordinator in the UW-Eau Claire Registrar's Office.
The fund was established by Linda Haag and Susie Warden who completed bachelor's degrees at UW-Eau Claire while working as full-time members of the university's classified staff. They created the Classified Staff Grant Fund through the UW-Eau Claire Foundation after completing their degrees to make certain other classified staff members had a similar opportunity.
Gray, who has worked for the women's studies program for eight years, is pursuing a Business Graphics certificate through an online program at the Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College.
"Graphic design is an area that I have always had an interest in," Gray said. "These courses will help me to create more interesting printed and electronic materials for our program."
As academic publications and curriculum coordinator for the Registrar's Office, Arnold is responsible for the production of the undergraduate and graduate catalogs, the freshman mini-catalog, curricular changes in the legacy Bridge database and new PeopleSoft database and the creation of the academic calendar.
She is pursuing a Certificate in Web Design and Development.
"In the not too distant future, we may issue catalogs online only rather than online and hard copy as we are doing now," Arnold said. “I thought I had better learn this technology more intimately in order to be of value to the university, my bosses, as well as our target audiences, primarily students, but also their parents, faculty and staff."
Receiving the grant is recognition of nontraditional students like herself who are expanding their skill sets, Arnold said.
"Receiving this grant is acknowledgement of my commitment toward reaching a goal and the challenges I've faced and the sacrifices I've made to reach this goal," Arnold said.
The support is very welcome, Gray said.
"I am very grateful for the generosity of Linda Haag and Susie Warden," Gray said. "It is difficult to find additional funding for courses and this kind of support is greatly appreciated."
Any current member of the UW-Eau Claire classified staff who is working at least half time is eligible to apply for the grant. Past recipients may apply for additional awards. Applicants must submit a brief statement about their employment history, the course they intend to take and how this course will be of benefit to them. The classified staff grant is an example of how financial support by UW-Eau Claire employees through the 2010-11 Campus Campaign can have an impact on campus.
