The Blugold Promise Scholarship Program is an ambitious program to provide support during the freshman and sophomore years for UW-Eau Claire students with great potential and hopes but limited financial means.

Why support a Blugold Promise Scholarship?

Providing a quality education to outstanding and deserving students is a tradition for UW-Eau Claire. The university has embraced the "Wisconsin Idea" that a university education should be made available to all citizens of Wisconsin and beyond - an ideal that has been seriously challenged by tuition increases and proposed changes to state and federal financial aid policies.

Through the Blugold Promise Scholarship Program, you can provide need-based scholarships to UW-Eau Claire freshmen whose educational opportunities have been most affected by these economic challenges. The unique aspect of the program is that the students receive scholarships their freshman year, and if they do well their first year, they receive larger scholarships their sophomore year.

There are limited resources for freshmen and especially sophomores who demonstrate academic success and the will to continue pursuing their college degree. These Blugold Promise Scholarships bridge the gap between freshman year, when they have access to a number of scholarship programs, and their junior year, when they become eligible for scholarships in their declared major. The sophomore year typically has been a challenge financially to these highly motivated students.

All contributions and pledges to the Blugold Promise Scholarship Program made through 2007 also will be recognized as gifts to the Fulfilling the Promise of Excellence campaign. The campaign is an unprecedented effort to secure at least $50 million in private support for UW-Eau Claire.

How does the Blugold Promise Scholarship Program work?

A gift of at least $1,500 over a two-year period to the Blugold Promise Scholarship Program will provide a scholarship of at least $500 to an incoming freshman with high financial need and great academic potential. If the recipient remains focused and successful throughout the freshman year, he or she is eligible for a $1,000 scholarship the second year at UW-Eau Claire.

If you choose you can sponsor more than one student, or you may provide a larger scholarship increment for an award. If you want to ensure ongoing scholarship funding for students, you may endow a Blugold Promise Scholarship with a commitment of at least $20,000. This pledge may be completed over a period of up to five years. (More information about establishing an endowed fund is available online and by contacting the UW-Eau Claire Foundation.)
