Carter Smith received his B.A in Spanish and German from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota and an M.A. in Hispanic Civilization from New York University ( Madrid, Spain). He finished his Ph.D. in Spanish literatures and cultures from the University of Minnesota in the spring of 1999 and joined the UWEC Foreign Language Department that following fall. His areas of scholarly research include contemporary peninsular literature and culture, especially as it relates to urban culture and society. He has published articles on the novels of such contemporary authors as Juan José Millás and José Angel Mañas as well as on the representation of Madrid in Spanish fiction. He spends his free time with his wife Beth and their young son, Gabriel.
