María joins us from the University of Illinois Urbana- Champaign. She is an Assistant Professor hired to teach Spanish Phonetics and Pronunciation as well as other courses in the Spanish major program. She moved from her home country of Spain to Urbana-Champaign, Illinois seven years ago to study with Prof Jose Ignacio Hualde, one of the premier scholars of Basque Phonology. Her research interests include Basque Linguistics, Language Rights,Language Revitalization, Socio-linguistics, and Language Ideologies. Her fieldwork has consisted of interviewing different Basque nationalist groups in the city of Bilbao as well as in small fishing villages along the Basque coast. As an instructor, she has taught all levels of Spanish Grammar, Spanish Composition, Business Spanish, and Hispanic Linguistics. |
