The UW-Eau Claire Grounds Shop uses a variety of deicing products depending on the location, temperatures and other conditions. They include:
- Rock salt: sodium chloride; used on roadways and
parking lots and on walkways in conjunction with Ice Ban 300; purchased
from the City of Eau Claire as needed.
- Sand and Salt Mix: used on roadways and parking lots
when conditions are too cold for rock salt to work; purchased from the
City of Eau Claire as needed.
- Ice Melter: a blend of four salts: sodium,
potassium, magnesium and calcium chlorides; used primarily on walkways and
stairways; purchased from the State of Wisconsin Purchasing/Waupun.
- Calcium chloride: used primarily on walkways and
stairways but also on streets and lots when temperatures are below zero;
purchased from the State of Wisconsin Purchasing/Waupun.
- Other Products Used:
- During the winter of 2002-03 we began experimenting with a couple of liquid products made from a blend of magnesium chloride and condensed distiller solubles (agricultural byproducts) which are used in pre-treating surfaces before a snowfall. The results were impressive enough that we made a commitment to expand the program. We built a sprayer unit for a tractor and purchased a storage tank in order to buy the liquid in bulk. The product we are currently using is Ice Ban 300.
- Ice Ban 300: a
liquid de-icing agent made by Earth Friendly Chemicals, Inc. http://www.efchem.com. It is non-toxic, non-tracking and
environmentally friendly. The product is primarily used for pre-treating
pavement before a snow or ice storm on the road, walk and steps on the
“Hill” and the Chippewa River Footbridge. It is also used for
pre-wetting Rock Salt after a snowfall. It is reported to be effective to
-67 degrees Fahrenheit.
