Central Stores maintains an inventory of approximately $200,000 in supplies used by various departments, with an average inventory turnover of two times. Items are marked up to cover the cost of the Storekeeper position. Through the use of combined purchasing power and bulk ordering, Central Stores is able to obtain supplies at discounted prices, thereby maximizing the use of limited budget dollars.
What commodities are stocked by Central Stores is determined in a variety of ways such as customer request, surveys, obvious need, and observation of incoming products from outside sources. Commodities removed from stock are determined by analyzing sales in the past 2 years and/or if the items have become obsolete.
Central Stores mission is to, as a service to the University, provide a quality product at a low cost in a timely and efficient manner, including delivery. By analyzing incoming products purchased from outside vendors, Stores estimates that it satisfies 70% of our customers needs for both clerical and janitorial supplies and 40% for tools and light bulbs. An average of 90% of the commodities are priced equal to or lower than commodities available through outside vendors.
