Training to
Teach English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

Certification to Teach in USA

The TESOL minor coursework fulfills all the requirements for a State of Wisconsin add-on license in ESL/TESOL. It is designed for any future teacher who intends to enroll in the UW-Eau Claire's College of Education or for in-service teachers who wish to teach English to language minority students in American public schools.

The demand for teachers with this skill set is continuing to grow as the demographic landscape of the United States changes with more non-native English speakers, refugees and immigrants. Teachers with this preparation are prepared to create interactive, multi-level inclusive classes that meet the needs of diverse learners.

The State of Wisconsin's Department of Public Instruction (DPI) notes the diversity of learners in the Wisconsin schools (March 2003 Census of LEP Students):

  • Over 34,000 children in Wisconsin are identified English Language Learners (ELLs) in grade Pre-K through 12.
  • Data of home language surveys revealed that 85 languages other than English spoken in learners' homes.
  • Data showed that of Wisconsin students 55% are Spanish and 31% are Hmong (approximately).
