Program Description

This intercultural immersion experience for undergraduate pre-service teachers brings together a nexus of race, culture, history, contemporary immigrant experiences, socio-economic status, and second language learning/study and teaching. In order for the pre-service teacher participants in this experience to understand the intersection of diversity and immigrant experiences, you will be immersed in a rich and unique immigrant community in the Midwest, the Somalis of Minneapolis/ Saint Paul.

Program Cost
$75.00

Program Benefits
This intercultural immersion experience will provide an unparalleled opportunity for the participants to develop a deep understanding of the challenges of urban immigrant life in the United States as well as the influence of race, culture, history, socioeconomic status, and second language learning/study and teaching.

Increasingly, Somali immigrants are migrating into Wisconsin communities such as Barron, but teachers and the communities know so little about their culture, traditions, language, and life styles, that the teachers are greatly challenged to include Somalis productively into school life or the community. Our overarching goal is to give our pre-service teachers at Eau Claire a jump start in understanding the Somali culture and immigrant experiences, so they can serve as a cultural bridge and ease transitions for Somali learners in their k-12 public classrooms. We hope that a deep understanding of one minority community of language learners will transfer into a more welcoming posture for other minority cultures as well, such as the increasing numbers of Hispanic and Ethiopian learners in our k-12 public schools.
