Program Overview

Our Academic Year English Language Academy English as a Second Language program includes a variety of academic and cultural components designed to engage students in the language and culture of the Upper Midwest.

Academic Program
Our academic program uses a student-centered integrated skills approach to instruction.

There are a wide variety of courses available to meet your needs. Students typically take Integrated English Language Skills. In this class, we work on your listening, speaking, reading, writing, pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar.

There are also electives that you can choose from including: Pronunciation, TOEFL Preparation, Listening and Notetaking, Grammar, and U.S. Culture just to name a few.

Cultural Components
In addition to the academic coursework, our programs include a variety of local activities and excursions. Students experience daily life in the United States while using their language skills in authentic situations.

Where We Are
UW-Eau Claire spans the banks of the Chippewa River in the heart of Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Named for its clear water, Eau Claire has a population of 65,000 people and is located 145 kilometers/90 miles east of Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota.

How to Get Here
The easiest way to reach Eau Claire is to fly into Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport or directly into the Chippewa Valley Regional Airport in Eau Claire. If flying into Minneapolis, you can make ground connections to Eau Claire through local passenger services located on the ground transportation floor of the airport. Please see the Chippewa Valley Airport Service web site for further details.

Who Can Attend
Adults who are eighteen (18) years old are eligible for admission into the ELA programs. There is no TOEFL requirement. Two years of English language preparation and a high school diploma or its equivalent are strongly recommended to succeed and advance in the program.

Program Details and Cost for Spring 2010
January 19, 2010 to May 22, 2010

International Student Orientation is January 19 - January 22, 2010. You are required to attend. Classes begin January 25, 2010.

The cost is $7995 USD.

Application Details

The application deadline is November 1, 2009 for Spring Semester. The deadline suggested allows time for processing the application, program payment, and immigration paperwork. Applications received after the deadline are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. The staff will begin processing applications on October 15, 2009.

To apply to the ELA Program, please complete the following steps:

1. Fill out the application. Please print out 1 copy.

2. Write an essay which answers the following question: What are three reasons you would like to study English at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire? Please type your answer and print out 1 copy (500 words maximum).

3. Mail your application materials to the Center for International Education.

After you submit your application and pay for the program in full, appropriate immigration paperwork will be requested. You should receive the paperwork in approximately 2 weeks. If you have any questions, please email inted@uwec.edu

We accept payment by cash, check, or wire transfer. All payments must be made in US dollars. Checks and money orders must be made payable to University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire. Please do not send cash in the mail. To make payment by wire transfer, please email inted@uwec.edu for more information.

Cancellation Policy

Once program payment is made, if a student withdraws, transfers, orcancels before start of program, the cancellation fee is $250.00. During the first and/or second week of the program, the cancellation fee is also $250.00, the third and/or fourth week of the program, the cancellation fee is 50% of the total program cost, the fifth week of program, no refund given. All withdrawals, transfers or cancellations must be submitted in writing to the UW-EC Center for International Education. Full refunds will be given if program is cancelled or booked.
