CONTRACTS (http://www.uni.edu/placement/overseas/teadmin/osinfo.html):
Currently, over 700 American elementary and secondary schools in international settings employ approximately 35,000 professionals. Most educators are on two-or three- year renewable contracts. Some schools may hire less experienced teachers for one year. Hiring requirements, salaries, and benefits vary considerably with many offering free housing, vehicle, U.S. tax exemptions (Americans employed abroad are generally entitled to a $70,000 exclusion of taxable income under certain defined conditions), tuition savings for dependent children, R&R trips, and bonuses upon completion of contracts.
Contract Advice (http://www.aacircle.com.au/teach-in-korea.htm):
Korea
English teachers in Korea occasionally have contract disputes with their employers. In the Korean context, a contract is simply a rough working agreement, subject to change depending upon the circumstances. Most Koreans do not view deviations from a contract as a breach of contract, and few Koreans would consider taking an employer to court over a contract dispute.
Instead, Koreans tend to view contracts as always being flexible and subject to further negotiation. Culturally, the written contract is not the real contract; the unwritten, oral agreement that one has with one's employer is the real contract. However, many employers will view a contract violation by a foreign worker as serious, and will renege on verbal promises if they feel they can. Any contract should be signed with these factors in mind.
Basic features of a contract should included the following provisions:
- Salary
- Housing
- Airline tickets
- Working hours
- Class sizes
- Severance pay
- Taxes
- Medical insurance

Many local schools will contact us when they are looking for foreign English teachers, so this means that we will be able to help you find a suitable job. Our staff will negotiate with potential schools for better terms, salary and benefits on behalf of each teacher prior to assigning them to the schools. Our full-time positions consist of no more than 120 teaching hours per month.
Most schools prefer 1 year contracts. If you intend going the work permit way then the minimum contract period the school will require is 1 year. If you are unable to stay for 1 year then please inform us upon application as there are possibilities of getting 3 and 6 month contracts with the help of AAC. 3 month contracts are available between June and September because this is the summer vacation period and additional teachers are required by many schools.
The benefits applying for 1 year contracts cannot be expected as those for teachers who have agreed to 3 ~ 6 month contracts. Such benefits are salary / wage increases, paid public holidays, health insurance etc. All of our 1 year teaching contracts offer bonuses, subsidised health care (70% ~ 80% of premium paid by the school), airport pickup and an airfare allowance. Depending on the school, you may also be lucky enough to get free accommodation or an accommodation subsidy .
