Karen Welch began teaching writing at UW-Eau Claire in 1987. She earned her MA in English from UW-Eau Claire and her Ph.D. in Composition Studies from the University of Minnesota. Her doctoral dissertation explores the ethical inclusion of social and political issues in first-year college writing curricula; her other research interests include writing in the disciplines, responding to student writing, and using writing to break student silences. Dr. Welch teaches all levels of college writing in which she stresses relationships between reading and writing, critical and rhetorical analysis, the importance of audience awareness, and cultural considerations for writers. She has taught in the Women’s Studies program and currently serves on its curriculum committee.
Dr. Welch is Director of Composition and is active in UW-Eau Claire’s Writing Across the Curriculum initiative. She also serves on the University Assessment Committee and the Non-Traditional Student Advisory Committee and chairs the Composition Committee and the Writing in the Disciplines Committee. She is also on the Advisory Board of the Chippewa Valley Theatre Guild. In her free time, she loves to read, bike, camp, and quilt.
