Anne Utschig received her Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Minnesota. She enjoys anything having to do with language, from the study of grammatical systems and historical change to acquisition and stylistics. Her particular research interest is syntactic language universals, that is, what features of the grammatical system are common to all languages and the degree to which languages vary in their grammatical structure. In her classes, Dr. Utschig hopes to give students an appreciation for the many different ways humans can express themselves, from the most subtle differences in pronunciation and vocabulary to the obvious differences in languages as structurally and historically far apart as English and American Sign Language. Dr. Utschig advises primarily English linguistics majors and minors, but she is also the advisor for the multidisciplinary Language Studies minor. Outside of her academic pursuits, Dr. Utschig enjoys biking, camping, and traveling with her husband and, when possible, with their two sons, daughters-in-law, grandson, and granddaughter.
