Carmen Manning

Dr. Carmen Manning joined the UWEC faculty in 2002. She received her Ph.D. in Education from the University of Chicago and her M.A. in Literature from Colorado State University. Dr. Manning teaches primarily in the English Education program and supervises student teachers. Her research interests fall into two main categories – Teacher Thinking and Writing Instruction & Assessment. Dr. Manning’s dissertation work focused on the Reflective Practices of elementary school teachers engaged in literacy instruction in inner city Chicago schools. She is now extending that research to investigate the development of pre-service teachers’ Reflective Practices – that is, teachers’ ability to articulate their theoretical reasoning for pedagogical actions.
Dr. Manning’s other main research focus is Writing Instruction & Assessment. Dr. Manning, together with colleagues from Chicago and San Diego, is a Principle Investigator for the Consortium for Research, Assessment, and Development of Engaged Literacies (CRADEL). Over the past eight years, Manning and her colleagues have contracted with the Consortium on Chicago School Research, the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, the National Writing Project, Hamilton County (TN) Public Schools, the National Gates Foundation, and the Chicago High School Redesign Initiative to both evaluate writing instruction within schools and also provide professional development to teachers regarding authentic and engaged writing instruction.
Outside her academic pursuits, Dr. Manning enjoys spending time with her husband and three young children.
