Helen Dale is one of the department's English education faculty. Her graduate degrees are from New York University and University of Wisconsin-Madison with concentrations in composition theory and research. Her doctoral dissertation investigated collaborative writing and the learning it promotes; she has published a number of articles on that subject and has written the book Co-authoring in the Classroom: Creating an Environment for Effective Collaboration. Her other research interests involve the ethics of qualitative research, the links between theory and practice for student teachers, collaborative self-study as reform in teacher education, and high school/university literacy partnerships. Helen teaches courses in writing and English education as well as an honors colloquium, "Critical Thinking in Writing and Research" and an inter-disciplinary course, "Race, Gender, and Learning." As a teacher, she believes students need to be actively engaged in their own construction of knowledge.
