English Portfolio

English majors are asked to keep an English portfolio.

As you build your English portfolio, you are asked to self-assess your work and to reflect on both its strengths and weaknesses. By reexamining your work, you should come to a greater sense of your accomplishments and a greater sense of where you should place your energies to improve.

The department has an assessment goal in reviewing portfolios (see the English Department Assessment Plan); the official assessment activity is a function of the Capstone Seminar in each major and not a function of the pathways courses.

The English portfolio should contain nine papers:

The Capstone Project
Eight papers (electronic copies) that span your college career (theoretically one per semester for a four-year degree; realistically you will not be held to such a strict production schedule). Each paper will be accompanied by a reflection statement. The portfolio should show a progression of learning; therefore, you may wish to include a less successful paper from which you learned something significant about your writing along with examples of your "best work." Represented in the eight papers should be:

Papers from general English classes (e.g. 210) as well as those specific to your major track
For comprehensive majors, one or two papers from your "non-English" courses, reflecting the interdisciplinary aspect of your work (those in 36-credit majors may also include a paper from non-English courses)
One collaborative paper, reflecting the function of collaborative work in English

The English Portfolio can be submitted online by uploading documents to the university server via the web. The university Web Portfolio page gives you access to your general portfolio as well as any other portfolios, in this case English.

To access the site, log in using the same username and password that you use for your UWEC e-mail account and go to: View My Portfolio. Directions for using the Web Portfolio are available at http://www.uwec.edu/help/webportfolio.htm

The English portfolio will be reviewed by at least two instructors in the Capstone Seminar. If you have any questions, please see your advisor.

Baccalaureate Portfolio

Consider that all writing you produce constitutes an "Archive" from which various "portfolios" can be selectively constructed.

Some classes require a course portfolio to be submitted for determining the final grade in the course.
The University Assessment Plan has established a university portfolio that is primarily aimed at aiding in assessing how the general education goals of the new Baccalaureate are being met.
