In Linguistics we study language itself, rather like the way biologists study life itself. We want to understand its dynamic processes, appreciate its vitality and diversity, and comprehend its laws. We want to make (and test) theories about how it works, and describe its functions as fully as we can, finding connections and distinctions among its personal, social, cultural, and physiological features. Often, but not always, we study one form or another of the English language, but all of language is really our subject. Students who elect a major in English with an emphasis in linguistics will spend a lot of time studying communication and the texts that make it possible, together with linguistic theories that will shed light on literary and social questions.
