Creative Writing Emphasis

The making and exchange of literary talents and gifts is a highly civilized and humane act. Some of the most important writers of this century have attended university writing programs. The writer’s point of view and expertise adds to the breadth and depth of our understanding and appreciation of the study of literature in particular and more broadly both the liberal and fine arts. Writing classes emphasize the careful reading of models, writing, and feedback for that writing. Within the broader English curriculum, creative writing provides some alternatives to traditional ways of discussing texts, a chance for students to more directly express themselves and a rigorous practice and instruction in working with language. Good writing affects the world. .
