Technical Writing Internships

Internship Application Process

Attending the Information Meeting:
Hibbard 407, Kate Gill Library

The information meeting is held in October for spring semester internships and March for fall semester internships. Attend the information meeting the semester before anticipated internship.

Note: Obtain date for meeting from posters in Hibbard Hall and/or email notices; it is very important to attend this meeting in order to talk with current interns and to learn

  • what internships are available
  • what to put in your resume and cover letter
  • where to send your resume and cover letter
  • what the academic requirements are

Applying for Internships

Deadline for application given at information meeting.

  • write a cover letter indicating
    • which internship(s) you are interested in and in what order
    • your email address
    • teachers you have had for writing classes
  • address resume and cover letter to the internship director below
  • put resume and cover letter in the internship director's department mailbox

Screening Process

Takes place early November or April, after application deadline:

  • First screening decision is made and students are selected for internship interviews; you will receive your notification via email.
    If you are not chosen, continue taking writing classes and try again. This often leads to an internship.
  • If selected, the internship supervisor's name and phone number are in your email notification.
  • Call the internship supervisor(s) for an interview if you have been selected.

After your interview, the internship supervisors will either contact you or let the internship director know which student they have chosen. Check your email.

Setting Up Your Internship

During the last two weeks before the end of classes:

  • Second screening decision is made. If you are chosen by the internship supervisor(s), contact the internship director listed below before the semester ends to set up the internship.

Registering for Your Internship

Before you go home for the semester:

  • Obtain the booklets and pre-registration form for English 498, located in the English Department Office, Hibbard 405.
  • Fill out the pre-registration form and leave for the internship director to sign in her mailbox.
  • Register for English 498, Internship in Writing. See the semester Course Schedule for more information.

Finalizing Your Internship

During registration week or first week of classes the following semester:

  • Set up hours for your internship with your internship supervisor.
  • Meet with the internship director and the other interns at the scheduled time during the first week of classes.
  • Consult the Course Schedule for Eng 498 for class meeting place and time.
