Featured Speaker

This year, the WEA is honored to announce that our plenary luncheon speaker will be Secretary Roberta Gassman, of the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development. The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD) is a state agency charged with building and strengthening Wisconsin's workforce in the 21st century and beyond.  The luncheon will be held on Friday, October 17, 2008 at noon and is included in the registration fee. Secretary Gassman will address the audience at 12:45pm and take questions.

Featured Session

The WEA is also excited to announce our afternoon plenary session will discuss the public policy implications of smoking bans. Our guest speakers will be Chad Cotti of the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh and Scott J. Adams of the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee and the U.S. Council of Economic Advisors. Drs. Cotti and Adams recently published their article “Drunk Driving After the Passage of Smoking Bans in Bars” in the Journal of Public Economics. The article has been cited in the Economist, in the Atlantic Monthly, on Fox News, and in newspapers worldwide, including the Wall Street Journal. This session will begin at 4pm. It will be followed by the WEA biannual meeting and then a reception.

If you would like to submit an organized session for the 2008 WEA conference please contact Marianne Johnson by email:  johnsonm@uwosh.edu.  Sessions are one and a half hours long, and include a chair, three or four papers, and three or four discussants.  Panel discussions, in which a moderator and three or more panelists discuss a topic of current interest provide an interesting alternative format. Please click the information link below for more details on proposing a session.

In 2008, the WEA will begin posting papers and PowerPoint slides for each accepted presentation on our website. We will do this every year so as to maintain an archive of the annual conference proceedings over time. We hope to use this as a stepping stone to a WEA on-line journal of some type in the future.

Please see the 2008 call for papers below for more information on this new and exciting development!
