Biography:

I received my Ph.D. in economics in the summer of 2002 with specialty fields in Public Economics, International Economics, and Econometrics. I joined the economics faculty at UWEC as an Assistant Professor in the fall of 2002 and have recently been awarded tenure and promoted to Associate Professor as of the fall 2008. My research interests are focused on public policy issues. In the past I have conducted research on both welfare reform and recycling policies. My most recent research involves several very timely and interesting policy areas. First I am researching the effectiveness of the USDA Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program in improving child nutrition in schools. I am also actively involved in conducting surveys to characterize the Local Foods landscape in Western Wisconsin. I have also been involved in conducting surveys regarding the health care coverage and concerns as well as attitudes toward health care reform among Western Wisconsin residents. My newest research involves assessing the effectiveness of First-Year Experience Programs in improving college student outcomes. Lastly I am involved in a variety of local economic research projects as the Director of the Chippewa Valley Center for Economic Research and Development (CVCERD). At UWEC I teach the Principles of Microeconomics and Health Economics. I have taught Intermediate Microeconomics for six years, but beginning in the spring 2009 semeser I will move to teaching Environmental Economics instead. I also teach with the Foundation for Teaching Economics (FTE) in a variety of programs designed to improve economics education in high schools and promote economic literacy among young people. I am an avid sports fan and enjoy watching almost all sports. In terms of participation, I enjoy playing basketball, ultimate Frisbee, and golf. I am a big music fan as well and enjoy listening to a wide variety of bands including DMB, Widespread Panic, and The Dead. I also enjoy spending time outdoors and relaxing with my family at our home in Eau Claire.
